Don’t worry I’ve not taken up rowing but I have been watching a video of Ben Hunt-Davies MBE, who won a gold medal back in 2000 and that’s one of the questions he asked.

You see when they were preparing for the Olympics they realised that if you do what you’ve always done and you’ll get the same thing right?

I mean if you follow the same gym programme, you’ll continue to get the same result, if you constantly yo-yo from one diet to another you’ll always get the same result.

And chances are that’s probably not the entire result you’re after.

Are you with me on this one?

So back to Ben and the British Olympic rowing team.

They’d been doing the same thing time after time and were getting the same result. But that result just wasn’t quite good enough. They came up with a question, a very simple question, that they asked each other all of the time.


Will it make the boat go faster?

So you think I’m nuts now, what’s that got to do with health, fitness, toning up and losing weight? It’s not like I’m going to jump in a boat and start rowing

Thing is, you can ask yourself that about anything, it doesn’t matter what your goal is.

  • If you’re training for the Great North Run or Tough Mudder
  • If you’re looking to lose a little (or a lot of) weight
  • If you’re looking to tone up and build a little (or a lot) of muscle.

Ask yourself “Will it make the boat go faster?

Every time you go to put something into your mouth “Will it make the boat go faster?”

Every time you choose to go to the gym or skip a training session think “Will it make the boat go faster?”

So will that chocolate bar, packet of crisps or take-away take you a step closer to your goal or a step further away?

Chances are further away yeah?

What about that healthy stir fry with rice noodles? A step closer, right? So it will make the boat go faster.

Still with me?

So this weekend, take a few seconds before your decisions and just ask yourself “Will it make the boat go faster?”

Trust me, if the answer is YES then you’ll reach your goals waaay quicker!
